This brings up some interesting observations on the example system:

Sales are pushed directly into the DB 'under the covers' via VBA calling ODBC.

The Excel spreadsheet seems to be stored on PCs rather than centrally or in source control. Alarm bells are ringing!

The product catalogue uses Access and is newer than the Java stack.

The feeding systems don't call the server directly; they use an export/import of text files.

The manufacturer gets the orders (for low-running stock) via a daily email. Simple and not prone to errors but has long latency. Is this a problem for users?
